My Thai neighbor in Chicago asked me to take my shoes off and I got weirdly defensive about it
She invited me in for tea on Sunday and just pointed at my boots, and I caught myself making excuses about my socks before I even sat down. She laughed and said in her house feet are dirty but shoes are dirtier, which is the opposite of how I was raised in Indiana where you keep them on. Anybody else have a moment where a small house rule from another culture made you stop and look at your own habits?

Seems like a pretty normal thing that you just weren't used to, not some huge cultural clash. People all over the world take shoes off inside and it's mostly about not tracking mud and street junk onto the carpet. Give it a few more visits and you won't even think about it.
