Rant: I brought up prayer habits and it killed the mood.

We were having dinner when I asked about different ways people pray. Someone immediately said it's rude to discuss, and everyone went quiet. Why is religion such a touchy subject in mixed company?

Religion hits too close to home for some people. They take it real personal.

When you say people take it real personal, @ryanhill, that's exactly it. I notice the same thing happens with politics or even sports loyalties. Those topics get wrapped up in how people see themselves, so any pushback feels like a direct insult. You see someone trash their team and they get just as fired up as in a religious debate. It's all about defending a piece of your identity, not just ideas. That's why those conversations can blow up so fast.

Ever notice how people will defend their favorite coffee order like it's a family member? Same energy as what ryanhill said. We pick weird hills to die on.
