Thought eating with my left hand in Zanzibar would get me yelled at... it didn't
Before my trip to Zanzibar in March I read about 10 travel blogs saying you must only eat with your right hand because the left is considered dirty there. So for the first two days I was super careful, holding my fork in my right hand only, which was awkward since I'm left handed. Then at a little seafood place in Stone Town the owner saw me struggling and laughed, he said locals only care about the left hand rule for certain things and nobody watches tourists at dinner. He told me to just eat however is comfortable, and honestly nobody looked at me twice for the rest of the week. Has anyone else found that a big cultural rule turned out way more relaxed in real life than in travel guides?
