TIL that in parts of rural India, talking about your period is still a bigger taboo than the period itself
I read a report from a health worker in Rajasthan last week and one line stuck with me: she said girls in her village miss about 5 days of school every single month because there is no clean place to deal with it and no adult they can say a word to. Five days. That adds up to almost a full school year gone by the time they finish. What got me is that the shame part is the real problem, not the supplies. She said mothers won't even say the word out loud in front of the father, so the girls grow up thinking it is some kind of secret sickness. I grew up in a house where we just said it and moved on, so this was a hard one for me to sit with. How do you even start to chip away at something like that without disrespecting the culture it lives in? I keep going back and forth on whether outside groups should push on it or if it has to come from inside.
