When a friendly comment at school broke an unspoken cultural rule
At my kids' school event, I said something nice about a parent's traditional clothes, but it started talk about a taboo topic in their culture. I was torn between being friendly and following their silent rules, which made me question my own ways. Have you ever been in a spot where cultural taboos made you choose between being kind and respectful?

Dealt with this at a family gathering once. Said something nice about a relative's food. It was part of a mourning ritual I didn't know about. Felt stuck between being friendly and respecting their grief. Learned to ask questions instead of assuming. But sometimes you just can't win.

Like your food compliment, my friend praised a funeral pie without knowing the context.
