I told my custom builder to skip the fancy mudroom storage and put that $4,000 into better windows instead

Met with three builders near Denver last month who all pushed the same high-end locker benches and cubbies. But my old house taught me natural light matters way more than organizing space nobody actually uses.

Hear @janac59 out on that point about windows changing how a room feels. That open, airy feeling from good windows is something you can't fake with furniture or paint. The light shifts throughout the day and makes your house feel alive instead of like a box with a roof. People obsess over cabinet hardware or fancy backsplashes but those are things you touch maybe once a day. Windows are constant. They affect your mood, your energy, even how much you want to be in that room. You chose the thing that actually improves daily life, and that's a solid move.

Yeah, the "nobody actually uses" part hit home. I put my money into better windows in my last house and it made the whole place feel bigger every single day.

The "felt bigger every single day" line is exactly right. People forget that windows aren't just about looking outside, they change how a room feels. Better windows let in more light and make the space feel open instead of cramped. It's one of those things you notice every time you walk into the room. Most people focus on fancy countertops or new floors when windows give you way more bang for your buck. You made the smart call.
