I was sure the 'smart home' package was just a gimmick for our build in Austin.

The builder, Lone Star Custom, wanted an extra $12k for wiring and a basic control system. I thought it was a waste, but my wife pushed for it. After living here six months, being able to adjust the AC and lights from my phone has saved a ton on our electric bill, way more than I expected. Has anyone else been surprised by a feature they almost cut from their build?

That's actually the standard wiring cost for a smart home setup, not a gimmick. Builders just mark it up a lot because they can. It's good you kept it, the savings are real.

Right? My builder tried that same markup trick.

Builders can mark it up a lot" explains my whole house budget, honestly.
