Just realized my old way of picking a builder was a total waste of time

For our place in Asheville, we first just looked at online portfolios and picked a guy with nice pictures. That fell apart fast when his timeline was a joke. The second time, we actually visited two of his finished homes and talked to the owners for an hour each. Hearing about how he handled a foundation issue on the spot made the choice easy. Anyone else find that seeing a finished project in person was the real test?

Wait, you talked to the owners for an hour?

Forget the finished homes, ask to see a job that's halfway done. The way they keep a messy site tells you everything about how they run the whole show.

Visiting a finished home shows you the final quality, which matters more to me than a messy site.
