My builder kept telling me to pick finishes early, I thought he was just rushing me

I was working with a custom builder in Asheville and had picked out tile and cabinets back in January. When we got to the plumbing rough-in last week, the plumber asked where the freestanding tub was going. Turns out the model I chose needs a specific valve placement that my floor plan didn't have room for. The builder had warned me, but I didn't listen. Has anyone else had a finish choice force a big layout change late in the game?

Oh man, "specific valve placement" is such a classic builder trap door. You pick a thing that looks nice in a picture and then it needs its own little universe of pipes and walls. I did the same thing with a fancy farmhouse sink that needed a whole different cabinet base. Had to redo the kitchen island layout two weeks before they poured the concrete. Builders aren't rushing you, they're just trying to save you from yourself.

That whole "saving you from yourself" thing is real. I picked out these super cool black matte handles for a kitchen reno once and didn't realize they needed a special kind of drill bit to install without cracking the tile. Ended up having to order them online and wait three extra days while the backsplash crew sat around playing on their phones. My plumber still gives me grief about it when he sees me at the supply house. Always check the fine print on that stuff before you get your heart set on something.

My last tenant picked a fridge that blocked the hallway.
