That GC who told me to stop over-engineering my trusses finally made sense

I spent 3 years adding extra blocking and clips to every roof I framed, thinking I was bulletproofing them. Then a builder in Denver showed me his 30-year-old houses that used minimal chord bracing and zero callbacks. Has anyone else found that their 'overkill' details just add cost without real benefit?

Your 'overkill' details just add cost without real benefit" man I feel that one in my wallet. I used to double up every bird's mouth like I was building for tornado alley instead of a subdivision in Ohio. My wife still finds receipts from that 'bulletproofing' phase and laughs at me over dinner.

The 30-year-old houses with minimal bracing sure sounds nice, but I'd want to know what those roofs actually look like after a few bad winters. That builder probably built in a dry climate with straight stringers and no surprises. I'd still throw in a few extra clips on a complex hip roof just to sleep better.
