Unpopular opinion: that $3,200 design fee for my custom build was the biggest waste of my money

We hired a residential designer outside of Nashville back in March and paid $3,200 for the full plan set. The guy never set foot on our lot, so the house ended up with the garage facing the wrong way and windows that stare straight into the neighbor's kitchen. We had to pay another $1,800 for a local draftsman to fix the plans before the county would even look at them. Next time I would just walk the lot with a builder who actually swings a hammer. Has anyone else been burned paying for plans from someone who never saw the property?
