Vent: Builder swapped materials halfway through and the finished product looks nothing like the plans

We signed on with a custom home builder in Austin last spring for a 1,500 square foot addition. The plans showed clear cedar siding and real hardwood floors. By the time they finished in December, they had used some cheap composite board and laminate that looks like plastic. I asked the project manager why they changed and he just said 'supply chain issues' with a shrug. The before and after is night and day, but not in a good way. The house we designed feels totally different from what we got. They pocketed the price difference too since they never adjusted the contract. Anyone else have a builder pull a bait and switch like this on materials?

Our guy in San Antonio swapped out our windows mid-project without telling us... we caught it when we noticed the frames were vinyl instead of the aluminum we picked out. He gave us the same 'supply chain' excuse and acted like it was no big deal. The difference in the way they feel and look is huge, honestly it cheapens the whole house. I get that materials are hard to find but they should have told you first and adjusted the price down. Just feels like they took advantage of the situation to save a buck on their end.

Supply chain my foot lol. They saw a chance to pocket the difference and took it. Vinyl vs aluminum is a night and day difference in how the windows feel when you open them, plus the look is totally different. I'd be pissed they didn't even give you a heads up or knock some money off the bill. That's just shady contractor behavior right there, plain and simple.
