A phishing email so bad it was funny, and why I'm glad I spotted it

I was going through my email last Tuesday when a message popped up claiming to be from my bank. The spelling mistakes were so obvious, it read like a comedy script. I chuckled at how poorly made it was. On closer look, the sender address was a bunch of nonsense letters, nothing like the real bank's web address. I moved my cursor over the link inside, and it showed a weird URL that definitely wasn't right. This goofy event pushed me to start looking twice at any odd emails I get. Now I always check sender details before clicking anything. It's a simple step, but it really helps keep my accounts safe.

That sender address sounds like someone just mashed the keyboard. It's sad to think anyone might actually fall for that.

Ever notice how the display name shows a real company but the actual email is a jumble? That's what gets people. When you're rushing through inboxes, you might see "PayPal Security" and click before checking that weird address. Train yourself to always look at the full sender field, not just the friendly name they put there. It's the difference between spotting a scam and getting caught.

Wired had an article on why bad phishing still works.
