Appreciation post: that coffee shop router finally got me to update my passwords

Stopped at Bluebird Cafe downtown yesterday and saw their open Wi-Fi login page had a note about rotating their passphrase monthly. It reminded me I had 14 accounts still using an old password from 2019, so I spent the evening fixing them. Has anyone else had a random public spot trigger a long overdue security cleanup?

The monthly rotation note is a nice nudge, but I push back on the idea that a coffee shop login page is what triggers real security. I've seen too many people treat that as a one-time fix and then forget their passwords exist for another three years. Public Wi-Fi is the exact reason I avoid logging into anything important, not the thing that makes me finally sort my accounts. Updating passwords is good, but doing it because a router told you to feels like the wrong motivation.
