Forgot my VPN on a hotel network in Chicago, 2am panic

I was booking a last-minute flight on my laptop at the Holiday Inn downtown and the login page looked slightly off, so I closed it, but my bank alert fired 20 minutes later for a $450 charge. I froze the card, ran a malware scan, and called the front desk who said 3 other guests reported the same thing that night. Do you trust hotel Wi-Fi with a VPN, or do you tether your phone every time like I do now?
