Got locked out of my own router after a firmware update at 2am
I tried to update the firmware on my Asus router last Friday around 2am and it froze halfway through. Now the login page just says my password is wrong, but I never changed it. I had to dig out the manual to find the reset button, which wiped all my settings and left me setting everything back up from scratch. Is there a way to back up router settings before a firmware update so this doesn't happen again?
The part about digging out the manual for the reset button hits home, been there way too many times. On the backup question, most Asus routers have a save settings option right in the admin panel under Administration then Restore/Save/Upload Setting, and it spits out a file you can reload later. Do that before every firmware flash, and if the update bricks the login again, you can at least restore your config after a reset instead of rebuilding every rule and password by hand. Also worth flashing firmware over a wired connection next time, the 2am wifi update freezing halfway is a classic way to end up exactly where you were.
