I had to choose between a free VPN and paying for one for my phone.

My bank app kept blocking me on public Wi-Fi at the coffee shop, so I needed a VPN. The free one had ads and a vague privacy policy, while the paid one cost $60 a year. I went with the paid one because I didn't want my data sold. Has anyone else found a good middle ground, or is paying the only real safe option?

Yeah paying is basically the only safe option with that stuff.

Man that "even had a padlock icon" part is wild. I knew a guy once who clicked on what he thought was his bank's login page and it had the green padlock and everything. He put his password in and then his phone started blowing up with two factor codes he never requested. By the time he realized it, they'd already drained his checking. The padlock just means the connection is encrypted, not that the site is legit. Learned that lesson the hard way through his story.

My friend got hit with a fake site that looked exactly like the real one, even had a padlock icon. Makes you wonder how many of those are out there.
