Password manager finally won me over after a scare at work
I used to think password managers were just another thing to slow me down. I kept all my passwords in a text file on my desktop like a caveman. Then last month our IT guy sent out a notice saying someone in the office got their work email hacked because they reused a password from a sketchy site. He showed us how the hacker got into their bank account within an hour. That made me look at my own setup differently. I spent a Sunday moving everything into KeePassXC and set up a master password I can actually remember. It took about 3 hours total but now I feel way less nervous about getting phished. Has anyone else here made the switch from using the same password everywhere?

KeePassXC is solid but there's a small thing to watch out for... it doesn't sync across devices on its own like some other managers do. You have to manually copy the database file to your phone or use a cloud folder which kind of defeats the purpose if someone gets into that cloud storage. I learned that the hard way when I tried accessing a work password from my phone and realized I'd left the file on my laptop. Also your master password should be a long phrase with random words not just something you can remember easily from your life, since that's still crackable if someone knows you.

Oh man that's such a common problem with local-only tools. It reminds me of how so many people rely on self-built solutions at home and work but then get stuck when they need things to actually talk to each other. Like I've seen folks set up their own file servers or use local apps for notes and then just give up because syncing is such a headache. The whole thing about manual syncing and cloud storage feels like a classic tradeoff where you trade convenience for control but still have to trust something eventually. And you're right about the master password too people pick easy stuff from their lives and think it's safe until someone guesses their pet's name.
