Pro tip: my router logged 4,300 login attempts in one week and I finally get why the default password advice is not enough
I checked my router logs on a Sunday morning after my wifi felt slow, and the admin page showed 4,312 failed login tries from 14 different countries in just 7 days. I had already changed the default password, but I was still using the default admin username and had remote access turned on because a tutorial from 2019 told me to. The fix took 10 minutes: killed remote management, switched the admin name, and turned on the firewall rule to block all outside traffic. If you have not checked your router's log page in the last month, do it today, because the bots are not waiting for you to get around to it. What is the weirdest thing you have ever found in your own router log?
Did you ever double check that the failed logins were actually coming from outside and not just your own devices bugging out? In my experience a lot of those scary looking numbers end up being a smart TV or printer retrying the same bad password over and over. Not saying remote access isn't worth killing, cause it is, but the whole "14 countries" thing can be a little misleading.
