Spent 6 hours fighting a virus that was sitting in my browser cache

Last Tuesday my machine started redirecting every google search to some ad site. I ran Malwarebytes twice, scanned with Defender, even booted from a rescue disk. Nothing found it. Turns out it was just a malicious extension hidden in my Chrome user data folder. Wasted a whole work day on something that took 2 minutes to delete once I knew where to look. Anyone else ever had a browser extension cause problems that normal scans missed?
