The old Sun Valley Mall in Concord still has its carousel horses roped off behind glass, 11 years after it closed
I walked the whole loop Saturday and those painted horses are the only thing left that isn't stripped or boarded, which honestly hit harder than the empty Sears. Did any of you ever ride one at a mall that's gone now?
There was a whole thing on the local news a while back about the carousel horses at that mall and how a preservation group tried to buy them but the owners wouldn't sell. From what I read, the horses are actually hand carved wood from the 60s and that's why they didn't just get tossed with everything else. It kills me that they're just sitting there behind glass where kids can't even touch them anymore. My cousins and I used to ride the one at our mall every single visit until it got pulled out in the late 90s. The whole food court area sat empty for years after and then they tore the place down for condos. Those horses were the best part of going to the mall as a kid, way better than any store.
