Last year our church tried the same thing and we ended up with 7 dishes, three of which were basically just chips and dip. People are busy, man. My wife works full time and I'm not about to make a casserole from scratch on a Wednesday night when the store has perfectly good fried chicken that everyone loves anyway. The real problem isn't the store bought stuff, it's that you're making people feel guilty for participating at all. When you set the bar that high, the folks who used to bring a bucket of chicken just stay home now. You traded 18 extra dishes of variety for a weird pride contest nobody asked for.
