Debate: Reading the Bible verse-by-verse vs. skipping around for comfort

I spent 6 months trying the verse-a-day method from a church app and got nothing out of it, but then I switched to just opening random chapters when I felt anxious and actually started remembering the stories better - has anyone else found one way less helpful than the other?

Man that EXACTLY happened to me too. Last year I was doing the whole chapter-a-day thing from some reading plan and I could barely remember what I read by Tuesday. Then one night I was really stressed about money and just flipped to Psalm 23 on a whim and it actually hit me different. I started doing that more often just searching for verses about fear or peace when I needed them and now I can actually recall those passages when I'm in a bad spot. The verse-by-verse stuff felt like homework and my brain just checked out.

Disagree a bit, chapter plans helped me see the big story instead of just grabbing verses when I felt like it.
