Got into an argument about church funding at my uncle's dinner table

My uncle in Phoenix said churches shouldn't pay taxes because they do charity work, but I pointed out that his church spent $40,000 on a new sound system last year while their food pantry ran on donations. He got quiet but I'm not sure I changed his mind. How do you balance religious freedom with fair tax rules without stepping on anyone's beliefs?

Sound systems are the classic example of churches wasting money instead of actually helping people. The thing is, churches get tax breaks because they're supposed to be doing good in the community, but once they start spending thousands on fancy stuff, it undercuts the whole argument. Maybe the rule should be that churches only keep their tax exempt status if they can prove most of their money actually goes to charity, not just keeping the lights on and upgrading the stage. Plenty of small churches run on nothing but donations and still feed people every week, so it's not like it's impossible to do both.

Right but who decides what counts as "real charity" versus just keeping the doors open? Because my aunt's church runs a huge after school program for kids in their neighborhood and that costs a ton in building upkeep and staff salaries, not just food boxes. Meanwhile the megachurch down the street spends $200k on a Christmas light show and calls it community outreach. Where's the line between valid operating costs and straight up waste
