Heard my pastor say something about tithing that made me stop and think

I was sitting in church last Sunday in Omaha and my pastor claimed that tithing 10% of your gross income is biblically required for salvation. I grew up being taught it was more of a guideline based on what you can give, not a hard rule for everyone. Does anyone else's church teach it differently or have you run into this specific interpretation before?

Gross income for salvation? Guess I'm going to hell for using the IRS standard deduction.

Last year I had a side gig that paid cash and I tried to report it honestly. Ended up owing $400 more because of self-employment tax. The church donations I listed barely made a dent. Sometimes the system just doesn't work out the way you'd hope.
