I used to think public schools were failing because of bad teachers until I shadowed my neighbor who teaches 5th grade in Detroit.
After watching her spend $400 of her own money on supplies and deal with 3 kids who had no breakfast that morning, I realized the system is set up to make good teachers look bad, not the other way around - has anyone else seen what teachers actually deal with day to day?

Man, I feel this in my soul. I once spent my entire lunch break hunting down a granola bar for a kid who didn't eat because I forgot my own snack that day.
