I Used to Think Voter ID Laws Were Just Common Sense Until a Poll Worker in Ohio Showed Me the Real Problem
I always figured showing an ID to vote was no big deal, like showing one to buy beer. Then two years ago I volunteered at a polling place in Dayton and watched a 78 year old woman get turned away because her license expired six days earlier. She had a utility bill, a social security card, and her voter registration card, but none of that counted under our state's rules. In the four hours I was there, three other people left without voting for the same reason, and all of them were over 65. I still believe in secure elections, but I don't believe the answer is making people jump through hoops that cost $20 and a trip to the DMV. Has anyone else worked a poll and seen how this actually plays out on the ground?
