My neighbor's church advice backfired during our HOA vote last Tuesday

Guy from three doors down kept pushing his pastor's take that we should just vote yes on the new fence rules to keep peace in the neighborhood. I trusted him because he seemed calm about it, but after the meeting I found out the new rules let the board charge $120 a year per house for maintenance. Now half the street is mad at me for going along with it. Has anyone else gotten burned by taking spiritual advice on a local political matter?
