My uncle and his church vs my dad and his union hall
Last Thanksgiving I watched my uncle go OFF about how church potlucks bring people together better than any community event. But my dad runs the union hall down in Houston and I've seen him organize 200 people for a single member's hospital fund in ONE weekend. The church had better desserts but the union actually paid a family's rent for 3 months while the dad recovered. Has anyone else seen one of these groups step up in a REAL way when things got bad?

Did that union also help with meals or rides to appointments? That's the kind of stuff that really shows a community has your back when things get heavy. I've seen churches do that for their regulars too but it seems like unions are built from day one to handle real emergencies while churches sometimes get hung up on who's "worthy" of help. The union just sees a brother or sister in trouble and moves, no questions asked.

Did they handle meals or rides too? @tylerr39, when I was laid off a few years back my union had a whole system for that stuff, someone would call and check if you needed anything and they had volunteers ready to help out... no forms or waiting, just people showing up with a hot meal or offering a ride to a doctor's appointment, really made you feel like you weren't alone in it.
