Rant: That $20 Bible commentary set from a garage sale was actually solid scholarship

I picked up a 6 volume set at a garage sale in Phoenix last spring for 20 bucks. The guy said his grandpa was a theology professor in the 60s. I figured it would be full of outdated bias, but I kept finding footnotes referencing peer reviewed journals and original language stuff. Has anyone else stumbled onto old academic resources that held up better than modern hot takes?

Six volumes for 20 bucks is a steal. I find that older academic work often beats modern stuff because it wasn't written for clicks or controversy. They actually had to do the research before publishing. Now everyone rushes to be first with a hot take. People don't dig deep anymore. They skim Wikipedia and call it a day. You got lucky with that set, but it's a shame how surface-level most resources are now.

Used to think newer always meant better. @willow_ellis you're right though, this set changed my mind about that.
