The 4 AM church sign debate I can't shake

Last Tuesday I was driving home from a night shift and saw a church sign that said 'God hates the sin, not the sinner.' but a few blocks later a pickup truck had a bumper sticker saying 'Hate the sin, love the sinner is just a cop out.' It got me thinking about how we use that phrase to dodge real conversations about what we actually believe. My takeaway is that we hide behind cliches instead of owning our views, and that makes it impossible to have an honest argument. Has anyone else noticed how these little taglines shut down debate faster than they start it?
