Why does nobody talk about just asking for the discount at the register
I was buying $400 worth of paint at Sherwin-Williams last Tuesday and jokingly asked if they could do better than the sale price. The cashier knocked off another 15 percent without even blinking. Did I just get lucky or is this a normal thing nobody tells you about?

Hold on, are we sure this is a good idea for everyone? It might work for you because you were spending $400 and seemed like a serious buyer. If I tried that when buying one gallon of paint for a small project, the cashier would probably just laugh at me or think I was trying to pull a fast one. Plus, you might get the discount one time, but the next time you go in they'll remember you as the guy who always haggles and treat you differently. It's playing with fire and not everyone is going to get the same lucky break you did.

Yeah but see that's the thing... you're assuming the cashier wouldn't go for it just because it's a smaller order. I've done it for like a $30 purchase before and it worked fine. The trick isn't about how much you're spending, it's about how you ask. If you're polite and just say "hey any chance you could knock a few bucks off?" most of the time they'll either do it or say no and move on. They're not gonna remember you as "that haggle guy" unless you're being rude about it... they see hundreds of people a day.
