Finally fixed my swampy Denver backyard by switching from overseeding to aerating first, saved me $320
I've got a small yard in Berkeley and the clay soil here has been a nightmare for the last three springs. I used to do what my dad did back in Ohio, which was just throw down a bunch of seed every April and hope for the best. Last year I spent $320 on a fancy tall fescue blend and maybe 10% of it actually came up, the rest just sat on top of the hard dirt and washed into the alley. So this spring I tried something different, I rented a core aerator from the Home Depot on Colorado Blvd for $65 for four hours and went over the whole yard twice. Then I top dressed with about 20 bags of compost from Denver Recycles and watered it deep twice a week. Three weeks later I've actually got grass filling in the bare spots without even putting down new seed yet. It's not perfect but it's the best it has looked since we bought the place in 2021. Anyone else notice the soil out here just needs that punching before anything takes? Curious what you all do for the hard pan underneath.
