Learned the hard way: my sump pump discharge was just feeding right back into the basement
I dumped about $400 into a new pump and a French drain setup at our place in Harvey Park, and the water kept coming back every spring. A neighbor named Ray finally asked where the discharge pipe emptied out, and it was literally 2 feet from the foundation. I moved it 15 feet downhill toward the alley, and we have been dry through two big storms since. Has anyone else found out their fix was just making the problem worse?
Did you ever look at where the water actually went after it left the pipe? I always figured as long as the pump was running and the pit was dry, the job was done. Spent two springs wet-vacing my carpet in Athmar Park before it clicked. My discharge line was buried but it ended right at the corner of the house, so all that water just seeped back to the same low spot it came from. Moving it out to the gutter changed everything. Now I walk the whole path every fall before the snow flies, because the pump was never the problem.
