Can we talk about how I ran my Detroit shop for 3 years before realizing I was pricing landscaping jobs all wrong?
I was charging flat rates based on square footage alone until a customer in Ferndale asked why her quote was $200 more than her neighbor's for the same yard, and I couldn't give her a straight answer. Turns out I was ignoring slope, tree cover, and how long the grass actually was, so some jobs I made $15 an hour and others I basically paid to do. Do you all price by the hour, by the job, or some combo, and what made you switch?
A buddy of mine out in Warren had the same wake up call with his lawn crew. He quoted this one lady a flat rate off her lot size and it took him and two guys almost six hours because the backyard was on a hill and the grass was knee high. Next house was flat and cut clean, done in an hour and a half, same price. He was so mad when he did the math later. What finally fixed it for him was walking every yard first and giving himself a time range, then pricing the job off that range instead of the square feet. Slope and grass height swing the hours way more than most folks realize. He never went full hourly though, customers hate hearing that number tick up.
