Found out Detroit has over 40,000 small businesses and I had no idea it was that high
Was poking around the city's economic data page after a slow Tuesday at my shop on Michigan Ave and saw that stat, which is way more than I would've guessed for a city our size. Makes me wonder how many of those are actually still open and grinding it out right now. Any other owners here feel like the numbers don't match what you see on your own block?
That 40k number probably counts every LLC and side hustle registered with the state, not just storefronts with lights on. A guy selling candles out his basement and a barber renting a chair both get counted the same as a shop with payroll and a lease. So the real count of places actually open and grinding is way lower, maybe half that on a good day. The city loves that number for press releases but it don't tell you how many of those folks are one bad month from calling it quits.
