Lost a storefront lease over a verbal deal last month

I shook hands with the landlord on a 3-year renewal, then he sold the building to a developer who demanded 40% more rent. Got a lawyer involved but since I had no signed paper, I was out in 60 days. Anyone else get burned by trusting a handshake in this city?

Next time get everything in writing before you move a single box. Even a signed letter of intent beats a handshake when money's on the line.
