My POS system crashed during lunch rush last Tuesday
I run a small sandwich shop in Hamtramck and my old Square terminal just gave out right at noon. Line was out the door and I had to write orders on napkins for about 45 minutes. I was scrambling to call my buddy who runs a food truck and he told me to download a free app on my phone to take payments. It worked okay but I lost about $80 in sales because people got impatient and left. That whole experience made me realize I need a backup system for busy days. Has anyone else here had a register fail on them mid-shift and what do you keep as a spare?

Oh man, I feel your pain! I've had a register crash at the worst possible moment too. What saved me was keeping a cheap tablet with a Square reader in a drawer just for emergencies. I also print out a simple price sheet with tax already figured for each item and keep it taped to the counter. That way if my main system goes down again, I can just punch orders into the tablet or even write them down and run cards through my phone. Those paper slips with the tax pre-calculated are a lifesaver when you're in panic mode.
