My POS system went down for 3 hours on a Saturday in downtown Detroit

Last month my credit card reader just DIED in the middle of our lunch rush at my sandwich shop on Woodward. No warning, just a blank screen and a line of 15 people getting annoyed. I had to pull out an old paper receipt book and manually write down every order with names and totals. Has anyone else had their payment system crash on them during a busy day in the city?

Man that's brutal. I've been through it twice in the last year at my place. First thing you gotta do is get a cheap Square reader as a backup. It saved my ass when my main system went down during a Tigers game rush. Keep a paper log too. Just a notebook with columns for date, order total, and last four digits of the card. You can process those later when the system comes back. Also call your processor the second it goes down. They can sometimes switch you to a backup server or at least refund your fees for the trouble.

Paper backups just create more work when you're already swamped.
