Overheard a guy at Great Lakes Coffee complaining about rent hikes
I was waiting for my order and this guy next to me was on the phone saying his landlord jacked his commercial lease 18% this year, no warning. It got me thinking about how many small biz owners in Detroit are just one rent increase away from closing. Anyone else dealing with lease renewals that are way higher than expected?

Had a landlord try the same thing on me back in 2021. Push back hard and ask for the comparable market rates in writing, sometimes they fold if you show them you know the numbers.

That part about asking for the comparable rates in writing is key, but what do you do when the landlord just ignores your request? I had that happen once and they just kept sending the same notice like they didn't even read my email lol. Did you ever have to take it to some kind of rental board or housing authority to get them to actually show you the numbers? I feel like some of them just count on you giving up after the first push.
