Stop splitting payments across cards at my shop, it's costing you more
I run a small floor cleaning business over in Hamtramck and the last few months I keep seeing customers hand over two or three cards for one job. They think it helps their credit or something, but every split payment adds an extra 50 cent fee on my end and I just bumped my rates to cover it. Last week a guy tried to split a $180 invoice four ways and ended up paying $14 extra in fees, he got mad at me but the POS system is the POS system. I know a bunch of you folks take cards too, so are you seeing this same thing or are you just eating the cost? I'd rather lose a job than eat a $20 fee stack these days lol.

Man, that's wild! It's like people don't realize every little "convenience" they ask for just gets baked into the price somewhere down the line. It's the same thing with people who return stuff constantly or demand free delivery on a $5 item, stores just quietly raise the base cost and everyone else eats it. Splitting a payment four times to "help your credit" is pure internet myth anyway, it doesn't work like that. You're smart for not just swallowing the fee, because if you eat it once, they'll expect it every time. Honestly, if more small shops pushed back on this stuff, folks would learn real quick that there's no such thing as a free lunch.
