A curator at the Toledo show told me my 400 layer glow piece was "just a filter," and I'm still not sure if she was wrong
Last month at the Toledo digital art expo I showed a piece I built over 60 hours in Procreate, mostly hand painted glow and light bloom, and a curator stopped at my table and said flat out that it looked like a stock filter anyone could slap on. Half the people around me agreed with her, but a guy from Detroit pulled up my timelapse and said the brushwork was the whole point. So where do you all draw the line between digital painting and just stacking effects until it looks cool?
Tbh that curator sounds like she just doesn't get digital work at all. I've seen pieces where people slap a glow filter on and call it done in five minutes, and yours took 60 hours of actual brushwork, so that's not the same thing. The line for me is simple: if you can watch the timelapse and see the work happen stroke by stroke, it's painting, filters don't do that.
