Critique that forced me to stop using airbrush on every piece
A guy on DeviantArt told me my digital paintings all looked "too smooth" like plastic. I switched to textured brush packs and started varying my stroke pressure, now my stuff actually has some visual interest. Has anyone else gotten feedback that made you completely rethink your workflow?

The plastic look is real with too much airbrush. I had the same issue where everything came out looking like shiny toys. Mixing in some chalky or rough textured brushes really changes things, especially for skin and cloth. The hard edge brush is still my go-to for blocking in shapes, then I layer softer strokes on top instead of blending everything to death. It keeps the piece from looking like one big smooth gradient, which is boring to look at.

The "one big smooth gradient" part hit home for me lol. I used to airbrush everything until my art looked like I was drawing with a wet bar of soap.
