My tablet pen gave up halfway through a big client piece

I was in the final stretch of a big poster design for a local cafe, about six hours deep, when my trusty old stylus just stopped working. No warning, no low battery light, just dead. I tried all the usual stuff, new nib, fresh battery, restarting the whole program, but nothing. The worst part was I had a soft deadline to send a preview that same night. I ended having to finish the last details with my trackpad, which felt like drawing with a brick. It took me an extra two hours and my wrist is still sore. Has anyone else had a pen just die like that, and what did you replace it with?

My old pen died mid-job too, and @ericschmidt is right about getting a basic one that works.

Used to think the fancy pens were overkill until mine died during a tax form sketch. Switched to a basic Wacom one and it just works.
