Back in 2018, I had to pick between keeping my old blog or moving to a big platform

My personal blog, where I wrote about tech policy, was on a self-hosted site I ran for 5 years. The choice was either keep paying for my own hosting and dealing with security, or move everything to Medium for free and way more readers. I went with Medium because it seemed easier and I wanted the reach. About a year later, they pulled down a post I wrote comparing content moderation across 3 platforms, saying it violated their rules but wouldn't say how. All my old stuff is still there, but I lost control. Anyone else regret moving their writing to a big platform for convenience?

Switched my portfolio to Squarespace for the clean look and easy updates. It worked well for a few years until they changed their pricing and locked some basic features behind a higher plan. I moved back to a simple self-hosted site with WordPress, which takes more work but I own everything now.

Been there, the ownership trade-off is worth the extra setup time.

But that "ownership" you mention is just a headache if no one ever reads your stuff.
