Conversation with my neighbor made me question if reporting spam is actually surveillance
My older neighbor Ron told me last week that every time I report a Facebook post for hate speech, I'm just helping them build a bigger profile on everyone, and now I can't stop thinking about that while scrolling.

Wow, Ron really dropped that on you out of nowhere? That's a pretty heavy way to look at something so simple. It does make you wonder how much data they're actually collecting from every little action we take.

Ron is completely right. I had the same realization when I started noticing how many 'report abuse' options pop up everywhere, not just Facebook but YouTube, Twitter, even my damn email. Every click is a little data point they log and analyze. It's like we're doing their moderation work for free while they build a file on everyone we're reporting too. Makes you feel kind of used once you notice it.
