Paid $18 for a VPN to read one blocked article and it ratted me out instead
Last year a news site blocked me with a paywall, so I grabbed a cheap VPN for $18 a year to sneak around it from my apartment in Cleveland. The article loaded fine, but two days later the site emailed me saying my account was flagged for "unusual access patterns" and locked me out for a week. Turns out the VPN exit node was shared by hundreds of people, so I looked like a bot farm instead of one guy reading about zoning laws. I spent $18 to get myself banned from a site I had used free for six years. Has anyone found a setup that actually keeps your reading private without tripping these flag systems?
Did you try just using a private browser window instead of a VPN? Honestly that worked way better for me, the site just sees you as a fresh visitor and never ties it back to your account. The catch is you lose your saved logins, but for one article it beats getting flagged.
