Influencer campaign flopped so hard our analytics looked like a flatline
We paid a travel blogger with 240k followers in Chicago $2,800 to push our new hiking gear and her three posts pulled in exactly 17 clicks, zero sales. Turns out she bought most of her audience and the engagement was bots commenting generic praise. I checked her audience overlap on a cheap tool and 68% of her followers followed the same 400 spam accounts. Anyone else gotten burned by vanity metrics on a micro influencer contract and found a better way to vet them besides the usual follower count checks?
Dropped $1,500 on a "outdoor lifestyle" guy in Denver with 80k followers and got 9 clicks and one refund request from a bot account. The giveaway was that all his comments came in within the same two minute window every post, which no real audience does. Now I ask for a screen share of their actual dashboard before I pay anything, because follower count is the easiest thing in the world to fake.
