Appreciation post: hit 30 stays this year and my back finally said enough
Just looked at my calendar and realized I've slept in 30 different beds since January, mostly in Chiang Mai, Lisbon, and Medellin. The number itself didn't bug me, but my lower back did, so I finally bought a real pillow instead of using whatever rolled up hoodie was nearby. Turns out carrying the same 7kg bag for 10 months is not a personality trait, it's just a sore shoulder. Anyone else hit a random number and suddenly want to buy actual furniture?
Pillows are actually one of the most underrated travel items, but the whole rolled up hoodie thing usually gets people through way longer than it should. In my experience though, it's not really the pillow that fixes your back, it's the beds themselves. Thirty different mattresses means thirty different firmness levels, and your spine never gets a chance to adjust to any of them. A decent pillow helps for sure, but the sore shoulder is probably from the bag straps more than anything else.
