My uncle said to always book a place for a month minimum, even if it costs more upfront. I ignored him for a year and lost about $2000.

It depends if you're new in town or not... a month gives you time to actually learn the neighborhoods and not get stuck in a bad spot long term.

But what if you need to move for a job or get a better offer somewhere else? Locking in for a month can trap you. I booked a place for four weeks once and a perfect apartment opened up after two. I had to eat the rent or miss out. Short term gives you options, and sometimes that freedom is worth more than a couple grand.

Yeah but I gotta side with the uncle on this one... that month gives you breathing room to actually look around without rushing. Like @jade495 said, you learn the area and avoid a bad long-term spot.
